Requirements
- Minimum of 14 years old
- Initial certification and annual recertification with Mass Youth Soccer including game rules, player safety, and referee guidance
- Social Security Number or Taxpayer Identification Number required for payment
- Referee equipment kit: Referee jerseys in multiple colors, referee flags (reimbursement available)
- A good attitude about youth development, fair play, and creating a healthy atmosphere
- Ability to constructively handle unfortunate and infrequent confrontation from fans, coaches, and players
- Be prepared to ref for Melrose and Middlesex Youth Soccer games
Education and Certification Details
Steps to become a Soccer referee For MYSA - before getting started, contact our referee coordinator Josef Markovic.
Step 1 - Create an account on the MSRC Central Database
This allows MSRC to contact you by E-mail and be alerted to upcoming events and courses. Once you’ve created an account, reach out to Josef so that you can be registered as a Melrose referee and be added to the current Melrose Referee pool. They will provide technical assistance or otherwise and help throughout the entire process as needed.
Step 2 - Choose the Right Course
Choose the “New Grassroots Referee - Entry Level” course
Step 3 - Locate a Course Nearby
The complete listing of all courses offered in Massachusetts, are on the MSRC website. The courses are updated continuously.
To check available courses and choose one that is conveniently located nearby, log in to your MSRC Central page under courses.
Step 4 - Enroll in a Course
Once you have found a course you wish to take, and are logged in to MSRC Central, all you need to do is click on the "Enroll" button, confirm your registration. You will receive confirmation by E-mail from the MSRC and the course you have selected will appear on your personal page when you log into MSRC Central.
Step 5 - Attend the Course
The class comprises mainly of Online Study Modules, which you can take at your own pace. (modules must be completed a minimum 72 hours BEFORE classroom attendance). Followed by a Two Hours Online class Attendance with a live Instructor – You will receive an Invitation via email one day before.
US Soccer Supplemental Course: SafeSport Training - Required for 18 years or older only (Free)
Make sure to save the course enrollment fee and confirmation, as you will be reimbursed at the end of the first season as a Melrose referee. After obtaining your Massachusetts referee license, please contact Josef Markovic to register as a Melrose referee and to be added to the current Melrose Referee pool.
Getting Paid
Referees are paid by Middlesex Youth Soccer each month or after the end of each season depending on whether you will be paid by paper check or electronically and what age group is being refereed. And the payment varies depending on the grade group being refereed and the position assigned for a particular game.
